King Charles Says His Address to Congress Comes at a 'More Dangerous Time' Than Queen Elizabeth's

King Charles became the first British king to address Congress, following Queen Elizabeth's 1991 speech

NEED TO KNOW

  • The King highlighted global challenges and emphasized the importance of U.S.-U.K. alliances during his historic address

  • Queen Camilla supported him during the speech, which received multiple standing ovations

King Charlesargued that the world is a more treacherous place than it was duringQueen Elizabeth's last Congressional address when he spoke at the United States Capitol.

On April 28, the King, 77, addressed a joint meeting of Congress in a highly anticipated engagement of his state visit to the U.S.

The King and his wife,Queen Camilla, are spending four days in the U.S. this week for an official state visit commemorating America's 250th, and he called out how the state of the world has shifted since his late mother last spoke at the Capitol in 1991.

The sovereign cited how his grandfather, King George VI, was the first British monarch to officially visit the U.S. in 1939 when "the forces of fascism in Europe were on the march," but before the U.S. got involved, noting that ultimately "our shared values prevailed."

"Today, we find ourselves in a new era, but those values remain," King Charles said in his speech in Washington, D.C. "It is an era that is, in many ways, more volatile and more dangerous than the world to which my late mother spoke, in this Chamber, in 1991."

"The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone. But in this unpredictable environment, our alliance cannot rest on past achievements or assume that foundational principles simply endure," he continued.

"As my prime minister said last month: ‘Ours is an indispensable partnership. We must not disregard everything that has sustained us for the last eighty years. Instead, we must build on it,' " he said, quoting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The King's comment that the world is now "more volatile and more dangerous" than it was in 1991 comes as the U.K. and U.S. take different positions on the war in Iran. The conflict has driven a distance between the nations, putting pressure on the King's diplomatic trip to help improve relations.

King Charles' state visit also continuedafter a shooting happened at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C., over the weekend. On April 25, a gunman opened fire near the press event, which PresidentDonald Trump, first ladyMelania Trumpand other prominent political figures attended.

A Buckingham Palace spokespersonconfirmed the next day that the diplomatic trip would continue, and PEOPLE understands that King Charles and Queen Camilla privately contacted the Trumps.

The King spoke about the startling shooting, the historic relationship between the U.S. and U.K., America's 250th, today's global political climate and more in his sweeping speech, which was a historic address.

King Charlesbecame just the second British sovereign in history to address Congresswhen he spoke on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, who spoke at the U.S. Capitol in May 1991. That trip proved to be the third of four state visits the Queen would make to the states during her record 70-year reign and she similarly hinted that diplomatic relations are the only true way forward in her address there.

"Some people believe that power grows from the barrel of a gun. So it can. But history shows that it never grows well, nor for very long. Force, in the end, is sterile," Queen Elizabeth said then.

"We have gone a better way. Our societies rest on mutual agreement, on contract, and on consensus. A significant part of your social contract is written down in your Constitution. Ours rests on custom and will. The spirit behind both, however, is precisely the same. It is the spirit of democracy. These ideals are clear enough, but they must never be taken for granted," she said.

King Charles' Congressional address was interrupted with over a dozen rounds of applause, many of them standing ovations.

Queen Camillasupported him during his speech in the House Chamber, and a palace spokesperson said that the sovereign was moved by the warm response.

"The King was deeply honored to have been invited to be the first British King to give such an address and was greatly touched by the warmth and generosity of the response he received," the spokesperson said.

Keke Palmer's Plunging Monse Corseted Micro Minidress Is Fully See-Through

Keke Palmerknows how to command a red carpet moment, and her latest appearance at the Billboard Women in Music 2026 event proves exactly that. Without relying on heavy theatrics, she lets strong styling and confidence do the work in aMonsemicro minidress. She delivered a look that felt both daring and intentional. It is the kind of appearance that immediately sparks conversation, not just for its boldness, but for how effortlessly she carried it.

Keke Palmer wows in completely see-through plunging corseted micro minidress from Monse

For the evening, Palmer stepped out in a strikingMonse Spring/Summer 2026piece. It blurred the line between couture craftsmanship and barely-there dressing. The micro minidress featured a plunging corseted structure, but what truly defined it was its fully see-through construction. Delicate chains and shimmering embellishments were draped across the body, creating coverage through intricate layering rather than traditional fabric. The result felt almost sculptural, as the dress moved with her and caught the light from every angle.

The asymmetrical silhouette added to the drama, with one-shoulder detailing and hanging chain fringe that extended from the hem to her ankle. This gave the piece a fluid, almost undone finish. It was a look that demands confidence, and Palmer leaned into it completely. She struck a good balance between fashion risk and red carpet glamor.

She paired the dress withmetallic heelsthat complemented the ensemble’s shine without overpowering it. Her accessories remained minimal, keeping the garment’s complexity front and center. Beauty-wise, she kept things polished yet impactful, with a sculpted makeup look and a sleek, short hairstyle that framed her face and enhanced the overall sharpness.

This was not a safe red carpet choice, and that’s exactly the point. Keke Palmer continues to push boundaries, proving that fashion at its best is about taking risks.

What did Jimmy Kimmel say? Melania joke prompts White House backlash

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is again facingfuror from The White House, this time for a joke he told on an episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" aired days before the shooting at theWhite House Correspondents' Association dinner.

USA TODAY

Kimmel billed a segment during the April 23 episode as an "alternative" to the annual media gala that normally hosts comedians but opted formentalist Oz Pearlmanduring PresidentDonald Trump'sfirst appearance while in office.

Kimmel stood behind a faux-podium and called Trump "a delicate snowflake with the thinnest, fat skin of any human being ever."

However, a joke about first ladyMelania Trumpdrew multiple responses from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

"Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow," Kimmel said.

Jimmy Kimmel speaks onstage during the Oscars show at the 98th Academy Awards in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, U.S., March 15, 2026.

Two days later, shots rang out at the Washington Hiltonand the president and first lady were evacuated from the event. After video of the joke resurfaced in the wake of the shooting, the first lady took to X and suggested ABC should fire Kimmel.

"Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country," she wrote. "How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community."

The presidentechoed the call on Truth Social. "I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel's despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale," Trump wrote in a post that was republished bythe official White House account on X.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for ABC and its parent company Disney for comment. The show is set to air at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT but Late Nighter first reported that Pearlman, who had been scheduled to appear, was replaced by "Pod Save America" cohost Jon Lovett.

Kimmel backlash echoes Charlie Kirk outrage

The backlash comes more than seven months after ABCtemporarily suspended Kimmel from his showin September 2025 for comments he made about the fatal shooting ofconservative activist Charlie Kirk.

At the time, Kimmel said that "the MAGA gang" was "desperately trying to characterize" the suspect charged with killing Kirk "as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

Kimmel was suspended afterBrendan Carr, chair of the Federal Communications Commission, urged ABC to take action, leading to accusations that the suspension was an example of the government censoring free speech.

Reactions to the April 23 segment on the press dinner fell along similar ideological lines, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggesting it was "completely deranged" at a briefing on April 27. "It's unbelievable that the American people are consuming it, night after night after night," she said.

Speech advocates again defended Kimmel, with MoveOn Civic Action Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne saying in a statement to USA TODAY that "any attempt to censor Jimmy Kimmel is a clear violation of free speech and accelerates America’s dangerous slide into authoritarianism."

Carr has not publicly commented on the monologue as of April 27, though FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez said in astatement posted to Xthat the shooting "must never become a justification for undermining" press freedoms.

"As we have seen after previous acts of political violence, we cannot allow this tragedy to become a pretext for silencing speech, even speech we find objectionable," Gomez wrote.
