Key Points

  • The film is rumored to be called Good Thing, a reference to Stewart's television catchphrase.

  • Stewart previously was the subject of the 2020 Netflix documentary, Martha, which she criticized.

Cate Blanchetthas a knack for portraying real-life characters, everyone from the Queen of England (Elizabeth) and Katharine Hepburn (The Aviator) toBob Dylan(I’m Not There). Could her next role beMartha Stewart?

The lifestyle guru broke the casting news, seemingly inadvertently, on Tuesday evening as she walked the red carpet at the New York premiere ofBrunello: The Gracious Visionary, a documentary about Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli.

Asked by aVarietyreporter if she would ever want someone to play her on the big screen, Stewart replied, “I hope so… I’ve been hearing rumors.”

Stewart then went on to spill the tea on what she knows so far. “I think there’s something in the works right now with… Cate Blanchett,” she teased, raising an approving eyebrow, “calledGood Thing.”

Varietysubsequently reported Blanchett’s casting and confirmed Janicza Bravo (2020’sZola) will direct the biopic. A representative for the actress did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

Good Thing— a reference to herMartha Stewart Livingcatchphrase, “It’s a good thing” — wouldn’t be the first time the entrepreneur’s life story was told onscreen. In 2024, she was the willing subject ofMartha, a Netflix documentary that she publiclycriticized.

"I love the first half of the documentary," she admitted to theNew York Times.

The second half, however, focused too much on her 2003 indictment for insider trading, subsequent conviction, and five months in federal prison.

"The trial and the actual incarceration was less than two years out of an 83-year life,” Stewart said in 2024.

Other gripes were the exclusion of her “utterly fantastic” grandchildren and “my love of travel.” Stewart was particularly annoyed thatMartha’s director, R.J. Cutler, missed much of the “fun” aspects of her life.

“R.J. didn’t get any of that in the movie,” she told theNYT.

But the worst part was the ending.

"Those last scenes with me looking like a lonely old lady walking hunched over in the garden? Boy, I told him to get rid of those," Stewart said of Cutler. "And he refused. Ihatethose last scenes. Hate them.”

Lena Dunham was surprised by fan response to Adam Driver’s “Girls ”character: 'That is “not” what I was going for'

Lena Dunhamsays the reaction toAdam Driver's controversialGirlscharacter was not what she expected.

While reflecting on some of the discourse surrounding her hit 2010s dramedy series, theGirlscreator and star opened up about being unable to control the way that her writing will be received.

"It’s like the girl in the horror movie where you’re like, 'Don’t go down the stairs!' She’s going down the stairs," Dunham said in a recent chat withThe New York Times. "You know why she’s going down the stairs? Because she’s a slut and she’s going to get killed. And what was interesting was that those dynamics, which in life were scary and lonely, would be recreated on television and people thought they were funny and sexy!"

Her primary example? The way people responded to the central romantic relationship inGirls, between Hannah (Dunham) and Adam (Driver), who were dysfunctional in myriad ways. A lot of it came down to Adam, a brooding alcoholic, who was often unpredictable in his behavior. But while this was a flaw Dunham was exploiting, some fans saw it as a virtue.

"I didn’t write Adam’s character to be a romantic hero," Dunham lamented. "By the end, everyone was like:I want a boyfriend like that! I want a boyfriend who throws two-by-fours and spanks me.'"

She clarified, "That isnotwhat I was going for."

Ironically, by the time the show came to a close, not even Dunham's Hannah wanted a partner like Adam — which ended up marking a moment of major character growth.

When the show first began, Adam served as the perfect boyfriend to introduce the audience to Hannah's character flaws. Their on and off-again relationship — which persisted throughout the show's six season run — often saw Adam unleashing his frustration on Hannah, while she poured her insecurities into their relationship.

Following the show's 2012 premiere, Dunham unpacked their messy dynamic during a South By Southwestconversationwith TV critic James Poniewozik.

"You don’t stay because there’s never a sweet moment. You stay because there’s these hints that something could be greater, and you're kind of reaching for it," Dunham said, referencing the good moments between the couple, often sandwiched between their toxic behavior. "I think Hannah has this sense that below it all, Adam cares about her, and I think he does. And I didn’t want to see a one-dimensional relationship where he's a dick and she has low self-esteem. She’s sort of implicit in her own treatment and he is sort of doing what he thinks he’s supposed to."

Dunham added that she "fell in love" with the character, who Hannah sees as a "poetical" figure in the vein of Walt Whitman or David Thoreau.

"[He's] talked and lived his life in his own way and sees beauty in odd things—even though he’s lived in the shitty apartment and has no job, he’s about as liberated as a person can be," Dunham observed. "And I think there’s a lot of qualities in him that she wants for herself, like she’s partially sleeping with him because she wishes she was him."

"It's the biggest of the franchise so far," Johnson teased.

TheMoanaactor also paid tribute to the movie star who launched theJumanjiseries in 1995. "This whole franchise would not have started or happened or kicked off in this really beautiful way without one man, and that'sRobin Williams," he said, prompting thunderous applause.

"If you don't know already, it's one half of the original dice that was used in the originalJumanji," Johnson said. "Robin, as we like to say, this one's for you."

Johnson had previouslyteasedhowJumanji: Open World's Easter egg nods to Williams. "This is the dice from the originalJumanjiwith Robin Williams as a show of respect," Johnson said in a video taken on set while showing off his necklace, which featured a board game die as its pendant. "[It's] a way of honoring Robin and this entire franchise that he started as we film our very lastJumanji. The big finale."

During the CinemaCon presentation, the trio of stars also introduced the first trailer forOpen World, which picked up with the cliffhanger that ended 2019'sJumanji: The Next Level, wherein a repairman (Lamorne Morris) accidentally activated the magical video game at the franchise's center and inadvertently brought elements from theJumanjigame into the real world.

The trailer then reveals that theJumanjivideo game characters portrayed by Johnson, Hart, Black, and Karen Gillan have been transported into the real world.

"Dr. Bravestone, I'm so glad I found you," Spencer (Alex Wolff) says as he approaches Johnson's character in a restaurant.

"Of course you are, because of my reputation and my charisma!" Bravestone responds in an over-the-top Spanish accent.

The trailer also shows various shots ofJumanjielements invading an urban landscape, including Komodo dragons slithering through city streets and a Rhino bursting through the walls of a building.

There are also numerous shots of theJumanjiavatars back in the jungle of the game, with Hart's character riding a motorcycle, Gillan and Johnson's characters in a slick sports car, and Black riding…a Segway.

Based on Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 picture book of the same name,Jumanjifirst hit theaters in 1995. The film revolved around Alan Parrish, a young boy who's sucked into the world of a magic board game and reemerges 26 years later as a grown man portrayed by Williams. Grossing over $260 million worldwide on a $65 million budget, the film was widely beloved, but didn't receive a proper sequel for over two decades.

Johnson and co. breathed new life into the franchise with 2017'sJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which saw the central group of teenagers swept away into the world of Jumanji via a supernatural video game console. The film introduced body-swap antics into the series, as each of the adolescent characters embodied a grown-up gaming avatar while trapped in the game.

AfterWelcome to the Junglegrossed an astounding $962 million on a $90 million budget, the cast quickly returned for 2019's follow-upThe Next Level, which saw the teens return to the game and brought Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, and Awkwafina into the fold.
